For cow’s milk protein allergy we would advise an infant formula where the protein has been hydrolysed i.e. extensively hydrolysed formulae such as Nutramigen/Similac Alimentum/Aptamil Pepti, not a lactose-free formula. If the extensively hydrolysed formula doesn’t work then we would advise using the mo re expensive amino acid formula, Hypoallergenic extensively hydrolysed formula (eHF) for the effective dietary management of the majority (~90%) of infants with cows’ milk allergy (CMA) and/or multiple food protein allergies (MFPA) 1–4 in formula fed babies.

The only truly non-allergenic formula currently is an amino acid formula however, this has a significant cost implication for use and has in most guidelines been reserved for the more severe spectrum of CMA 1,6,7.
